No. 45: Top Hose Leak

Ever since I first restored the A7 I've a bad leak after leak where the junction of the top hose castings meets the cylinder head. I've replaced several rubber gaskets - left dry - smeared with sealer etc etc and put 'BARRS' compound in the water, but the leak always returns to weep over the top of the cylinder head and fill up the spark plug depression. A few weeks ago it started again. I phoned Mick at the A7 Workshop to ask him to send a gasket yet again, and I had a chat about it. He told me the latest fix was to use clear silicone as a sealer (Yes! the same as used to seal around the bath). It can be used with or without the gasket, but as I'm a belt and braces type I used the gasket. The technique is to clean the faces, smear on the Silicone to all faces, set in place with the fixing nut tightened just finger tight and then left for 24 hours to set. After this time it can be tightened up fully to form the seal. So far it has been successful, no leaks after several weeks and 200 miles or so.
